During the 19th century the number of Latvian artisans and businessmen
in the town of Limbazi was gradually increasing. One of the good customs
these people took from the local German community was the keeping and
passing of family heirlooms. These objects usually were mementos of most
important events in the family history, such as baptisms, marriages,
acquisitions of property etc.. People took care of their heirlooms even
in the most difficult moments of their lives and faithfully kept them
during the times of war and exile.
Gertrude Grinberga ( nēe Cībere ) went into exile in 1944. Her husband, member of the military order of Lāčplēsis Ojārs Grīnbergs, was arrested and executed in Summer of 1941. Mrs. Grīnberga left her hometown together with her daughter Ērika.
They took with them heirlooms, keepsakes and mementos of related families Bonecke, Cībers, Morics, Pommers and Vilders, including an ancient wedding ring of Vilders family, dated with 1795.
These family heirlooms were donated to Limbazi museum by Ērika Vilipsone.
