Since 1870s the factories, farms and logging works around the region of
Limbazi saw the introduction of mobile steam engines or locomobiles. A
locomobile or steam tractor was a slightly remodeled train engine on
wheels that could be moved around and used as a permanent or temporary
industrial motor. The steam engine of such type was the first one used
on the factory of woolen goods founded by Aleksandrs Tīls in 1876. Later
it became the largest industrial plant of the town, manufacturing wool
felt hats and employing around 400 workers. The factory had several
locomobiles that moved electric generators and gave lighting to some
buildings and streets of Limbazi.
In 1913 the Limbazi branch of the Latvian Economical society opened a new store where, among other agricultural machinery, one could buy a locomobile.
